This week's Re-visiting Travel photos' is on another Melbourne folder from 2018. These photos were taken when James, Caroline, and I decided to join a photo walk meet up that 'Film Never Die' organized through Facebook.
We stayed with the group for about 20 minutes before leaving and finding our own spots to photograph around the Royal Botanic Garden.
Most of the photos are just silly ones, experimenting with different angles and views, and taking photos of each other.
It seems to be a common issue finding photos that are edited but have no original files to go with. The same for finding originals files but no edited files for them.
In any case, I've separated them for viewing pleasure.
Let's look at the group of photos with Original, Edited, and Re-edited files.
The original files are quite nice. The white balance is good and the highlights aren't blown out. There are a few photos where the brightness in the middle range is too high, but I was able to bring those down.
The focusing is on point and framing wide gave me a lot of room to edit how I wanted it to be framed.
The edited files are really nice. I was a little heavy on the aqua tones as usual but I do like the warmth the photos have. It gets across a cosy and vibrant feeling. A very Autumny vibe.
The re-edits feel stronger in contrast and blacks. A little darker finish. the aqua tone now a real blue. The shadows and highlights are more true. The red-ish highlights now an orange. A little cooler shadow tones but I made sure to minus the blue saturation to get rid of the heaviness.
Looking at the Original to re-edited files, I really like the hazy background on the portraits shots.
It is mainly in the shots that have a strong sun presence. I feel I edited true to skin tone. The original files have a green tinge over the photo which I don't like, so I made sure to get rid of that.
Straighten the photos up was a little difficult when it came to the ones of James and I being silly. I was trying to straighten for the fit but then looking at the background realized I was way off since we were on a slight hill. So I straightened for the road in the background and at times, our heads.
The last lot of photos are all original edits that didn't have original files. But looking at the majority of them, I don't think I would change anything about them. I love the dreamy warm glow they have, especially the portrait shots. The hazy layer it seems to have with the reddish-bronze and washed out whites and blues.
I really like the shot of Caroline looking out from the Anzac memorial down the paved path to the city. Having a person framed on either side of the shot gives the image balance, and having her centered and framed in the lower half gives us room to look over her head to the cityscape.
And the portrait photos of her from a middle ranged low angle is brilliant. It gives us very subtle tree branches in the background and not an overload of cloud/sky. She takes up 2/3 of the shot which is a great amount for the distance being shot at.
A very quick run-through of the photo edits, but that's all they need. Thanks for joining me.
As always, join me next Friday at 12 pm.
Until then, stay safe.
