Re-visiting Travel Photos - Amsterdam (part 2) 2019

Hi all! Welcome to part 2 of re-visiting photos I took in Amsterdam. I wanted these lot of photos to feel more like they were taken on film instead of digital. A different approach to how I edited the photos from part 1.

When looking at these photos, I noticed the greens driving the photos and wanted to play that as a strength. I knew the framing was an important part of these ones as they were all quick snaps while walking around. The good thing about that is the frames were pretty solid to begin with. I must have known what I wanted to capture when taking these in June last year.

Making green the main focus of colour made me notice the warmth I could bring back into the photos as it is very noticeable in some of them. The strong contrast between the highlights and shadows in this one made me realise this.

To me, these shots taken down this street with the two ladies smoking, feel like a painting. I love it so much. I'm really happy I shot them.

Playing that to my strength was a good idea. I started out editing the one below which gave me the settings I carried over and adjusted for each other photo.

I didn't want the highlights over the top, so I almost always brought them down but I didn't want the image to feel flat and have the whites knocked way down, so I paid close attention to the levels. Majority of the photos actually needed the shadows raised but if I bumped them up too high they would give off a green tinge so I had to find the right balance with the tint and shadow colour, as well as how much I could bring it up.

The way some of these shots have been framed I found to be quite cool. I had the shutter very high as to capture the people riding/walking through the frame. My top 3 favourites from this spot would be this one. Something about the way the face has been cut out the frame.

I especially like this one. Pairing these two up came from sheer luck and timing. The guy with his legs together and the girl with hers in stride. Just amazing.

And this one. The focus on the background with the bikes all lined up on the fence, the trees with the green, and the blurriness of the rider with her kid on the handlebars, just gives me a sense of movement. A city that is always on the move, but with bikes. I like it.

The photos I had already edited last year can be seen with the original photos and the re-edits. Original on left, edited in middle, and re-edits on the right.

All the shots with no original edits are here. Originals on left, re-edits on the right.

That's it for this blog. You can find a few shots in the store from this post.

Join me next Friday at 12 pm for another post. Until then, stay safe.
